As mentioned in the last article, the time is here for students to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This form is used to determine if students qualify for federal and state grants and loans. In addition, this is the application for the Tennessee Lottery scholarships. To help parents with the process, a Financial Aid Information Night is planned for Thursday, January 18, 6:00 -7:00 p.m. at Lincoln County High Library. Sherry Mason from Motlow Fayetteville Center and Jason Seay from the Tennessee Education Lottery Scholarship Program will present information and be available to answer questions. Parents and students are encouraged to come. New scholarships that have been announced include the following: The National Wild Turkey Federation’s Academic Scholarship is available in guidance, or students can download the application at www.nwtf.org/jakes. The deadline is February 1, 2007. The Highland Rim Civitan Club provides a one-year scholarship of $1,000 to the college, university, or vocational/technical school of the recipient’s choice. Students should come to guidance for an application and return the application by April 1. The Falcon Club Athletic Scholarship is available for students who have participated on any athletic team at Lincoln County High School. Application may be picked up in guidance. The deadline is February 16. The Alpha Kappa Club is offering the Bessie Parks Memorial Scholarship for seniors planning to attend Motlow. Applications are available in guidance and should be returned by February 16. The Highland Yacht Club of Coffee County is sponsoring a scholarship for seniors. The requirements for the scholarship and applications are in guidance. One requirement is that the student must be associated with an area yacht club or have a reference from an area yacht club member. The deadline is April 1. The McKelvey Foundation Entrepreneurial Scholarship is for seniors who own and operate their own business. Students must apply online at www.mckelveyfoundation.org. January 31 is the deadline for applying. The 2007 Commitment to Agriculture Scholarship Program offers one hundred $1,500 college scholarships for farm youth pursuing careers in agriculture. The application is available at www.monsanto.com or www.nafb.com. Applications must be submitted by February 15, 2007. The Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year Award Program offers a $7,500 scholarship to 25 outstanding scholar athletes in Grade 12 nationwide. For official rules and to apply, go to www.bodybymilk.com. March 9 is the deadline. Mississippi State University offers a number of scholarships for non-resident students. Their general academic scholarships cover 100% of the non-resident portion of tuition for students who have a 24 or higher on the ACT and a 3.0 core grade-point average (GPA). Access grants are available for non-resident students who have a 20-23 ACT score and have a 3.0 core GPA. The access grant pays 50% of the non-resident portion of tuition for four years as long as a 3.0 GPA is maintained. The University of Mississippi will host a Scholars Day on February 3, 2007, for students to compete for scholarships. To attend a student must have a 26 or more ACT composite score or 1170 or more SAT score. Registration cards are available in guidance and must be returned before January 26.
