by Dwight Turner Many area residents may be unaware that a unique and fascinating robotics program is underway at the Limestone County Career Technical Center High School, located in Athens. A handful of dedicated volunteers and instructors have given much time, energy and effort to make the FIRST Robotics Team #34 a success. Recently, the hard work of five of these instructors was recognized and rewarded by Siemans VDO, a corporate sponsor of the program. Monica McDowell, Debbie Wilson, Carol Raney, Mike Raney and Brian Terry all received a $500 personal check, compliments of Siemens, at the January 9 meeting of the Limestone County Board of Education. "These instructors are a dedicated group of teachers that go the extra mile and that really makes an impact on the students," said Siemens VDO Project Director and Limestone County Career Technical Center FIRST Robotics Mentor Dana Hobbs. "The kids who are involved with the FIRST robotics team are our future innovators and most of them pursue engineering/technical and computer programming degrees," added Siemens VDO Operations Manager Steve Burcham. "It was great to surprise these instructors with a $500 award." |
