For this week your editors have decided to give a brief history of Valentine’s Day since love is still very much in the air. There are varying opinions as to the origin of Valentine’s Day. Some experts state that it originated from St. Valentine, a Roman who was martyred for refusing to give up Christianity. Other aspects of the story say that Saint Valentine served as a priest at the temple during the reign of Emperor Claudius. When Claudius decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine’s actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death. He died on February 14, 269 A.D. Legend also says that St. Valentine left a farewell note for the jailer’s daughter, who had become his friend, and signed it “From Your Valentine”. In 496 A.D. Pope Gelasius set aside February 14 to honor St. Valentine.
