by Dwight Turner

Ardmore High School Senior Kyle Lewter has been selected to participate in the Leadership Through Learning Presidential Classroom Delegate program, to be held later this month in Washington, D.C.

Lewter is a member of a select group of students nationwide to participate in the innovative program, which is sponsored by the Foundation for Rural Education and Development.

"I am extremely honored to have been selected to participate in the program," said Lewter. "I think it will give me an opportunity to learn about the inner workings of our government and give me increased insight into what it means to be an American."

Lewter will spend a week in Washington, D.C., participating in a plethora of activities. Students selected for the program, known as "Presidential Scholars," will have the opportunity to interact with a diverse group of students from around the country and attend seminars and discussions with media and other Washington insiders.

Lewter will also spend time on Capitol Hill, visiting the offices of area Senators and Representatives, observing various committee meetings and witnessing proceedings on the floor of both houses of Congress.

"I am looking forward to going to Washington," continued Lewter. "It will be a great learning experience."

Lewter is no novice to the political process. A member of the Alabama Republican Committee and the Republican National Committee, Lewter currently serves on the Limestone County Republican Executive Committee. Last year, as a junior, Lewter was chosen by the administration, faculty and staff of Ardmore High School to be a delegate to the annual Alabama Boys State meeting, held at Montevallo University.

In addition to his political activities, Lewter is also a member of the Beta Club Executive Committee, the Science Club, the National Science and Honor Society, Math Club, Mu Alpha Theta, Future Farmers of America and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Lewter has also been a member of the Ardmore High School Band and, since 2003, a member of the Limestone County Honor Band.

Kyle is the son of Tim and Diane Lewter and has one older brother, Zeb Lewter, and a younger sister, Haley Lewter.

He is the grandson of Sarah Lewter and the late T.J. Lewter and Pauline Jones and the late Willie T. Jones, Jr, all of the Hollands Gin community.
