Pre-registration for the 2006-2007 year has begun. On Thursday, April 6, Mrs. Carol Cooper visited Ninth Grade Academy and Fayetteville City Junior High to discuss pre-registration for students coming to Lincoln County High School. Students were provided the Lincoln County High School academic catalog and a pre-registration form. The form must be returned by Thursday, April 13, with a parent's signature. Students will select eight classes and four alternates for electives. As students choose their classes, they must include courses that will meet the graduation requirements for the paths they have chosen.

Students may choose the university path, which includes the core curriculum of courses required for entrance into Tennessee's public colleges and universities. A second choice is the technical path, which includes the core curriculum and a four-unit study focusing on a particular area. The third choice is the dual path, which meets both university and technical requirements.

The core curriculum courses required by all paths are four units of English, three units of math, three units of science, four units of social studies and one unit of lifetime wellness. Beginning this year all ninth graders on the technical path must take one unit of math above Algebra I. They may choose Algebra II, geometry, or technical geometry. In addition to graduation requirements, students should consider course selection based on their degree of interest in a subject, future plans for study and employment, pre-requisites for classes and prior grades.

Students must also consider whether they are working toward a general diploma or honors diploma. Honors diploma requires a 3.0 grade-point average (GPA) and Honors or AP English 10, 11, 12, Honors Biology, Honors American History, Honors Algebra 2, and Honors Geometry.

Students who plan to go to college should take challenging classes that will better prepare them for college and increase their chances of getting a scholarship. The scholarships given by colleges are based on GPA and ACT scores. The higher the ACT score, the better chance a student has to get scholarships. Studies show the best way to improve the ACT score is to take higher-level math, science, English and history classes.

New classes for 2006-2007 include Algebra 1 A & B, Fitness Walking, Earth Science, Forestry, Ag Power & Equipment (two semesters), German III, Honors Algebra 2, Honors Geometry, and Technical Geometry. Algebra 1 A & B will spread the Algebra 1 curriculum over two semesters for those who need to go at a slower pace.

Mr. Lee Brannon and Ms. Delores Bentley visited English 10, English 11, biology, and American history classes to give sophomores and juniors pre-registration information and forms. These visits were April 6, 7, and 11. Sessions were held in the commons area for students who are not enrolled in these classes. On Tuesday, April 11, through Thursday, April 13, counselors will be in their offices to answer questions and work with students individually. All sophomores and juniors must have a parent's signature on the pre-registration forms and must return them by Monday, April 17, 2006.

Students and parents are encouraged to work together to select courses with great care. Classes will be organized, teachers will be hired, and teacher assignments made based upon student requests. It is essential that parents and students understand that students are contracting for the specific classes and will be expected to take them during the 2006-2007 school year. Parents may call the guidance office at 438-1491 for more information or answers to specific questions.
