Historical Society Hosts The Elkton Historical Society will host Dr. Michael Bradley, noted author and historian for their regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, May 1, at 7:00. The meeting will be held at Terri’s Restaurant located on 31 Highway, next door to Lib’s Grocery in Elkton, TN. Dr Bradley taught US History at Motlow College for 36 years and is the author of several books on the War Between the States period. Some of his books are: Tullahoma: the 1863 Campaign; With Blood and Fire: Behind Union Lines in Middle Tennessee; Nathan Bedford Forrest’s Escort & Staff in War and Peace; and It Happened in the Civil War. He also writes on other topics including the Revolutionary War, the Great Smoky Mountains, and historical stories. In 2006 Dr Bradley was elected Commander of the Tennessee Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. He is a Life Member of that organization. On Tuesday night, Dr. Bradley will bring to life the period in 1862 when Bedford Forrest was given permission to form a personal bodyguard, or escort, company of 100 men. Most of those men came from the Lincoln-Bedford-Coffee-Rutherford county area. They served as guards for the headquarters and became close associates with the staff-men who ran the various military departments Forrest needed. He will be telling about those men in war and in peace. In 1877 the survivors of this group formed a veterans associated and they met regularly until 1906. “Terri’s Restaurant is a delightful place to meet with friends and Dr. Bradley is a lively and entertaining speaker, so come and bring a friend,” said Historical Society member Carolyn Thompson. “You can also satisfy that ‘sweet tooth’ with some wonderful pies and desserts made by Terri. The public is invited,” Thompson added. For more information, you may call 931-468-0668. |
