Elkton City Council Holds April Meeting

The City of Elkton Board of Mayor and Aldermen met in regular session on April 12, at 6 p.m.

The meeting was called to order by Mayor Ware and was led in prayer by Alderman Roosevelt Whitfield.

Present at the meeting were Mayor Bill Ware, City Recorder Margie Brooks, Aldermen Payton Blade, Doug Turner, Roosevelt Whitfield, Teresa Abernathy and Barry Wilburn, along with City Attorney Joe Fowlkes, Police Chief Jim Stewart, guests and media.

The financial report and the minutes of last month’s meeting were read and approved. Fire Chief Blade reported that one bid was turned in for heaters in the new fire hall. J and M Home Store made a bid of $8,115. Motion was made by Alderman Turner to accept the bid and was seconded by Alderman Wilburn. The motion passed 5/0.

Blade also stated that a truck was acquired from the Forestry Dept. and would be outfitted with the proper equipment to be used as a water truck for the Fire Dept.

Mayor Ware announced that the census of recently annexed property had been submitted to the Department of Economic Development, and a department employee had visited Elkton to confirm the census. The city should be informed by July on the status of the revenue increases for State Street. If the city is granted an increase, they will have the funds to install the remainder of the street lights that have been in planning.

A letter from Agent Steve Wilson of the 22nd drug task force thanking Elkton and Chief Stewart for their cooperation and assistance with the drug problem in Elkton was read by Mayor Ware.

A resolution to change charter was read and a motion was made by Alderman Turner to approve the change. Alderman Wilburn seconded the motion that passed 5/0. Copies of the new charter resolution would be sent to Senator Jackson and Representative Bass to be submitted to the State Legislature for approval.

An ordinance to raise residential sanitation fees was read three times and passed unanimously.

An ordinance for city employees to serve on board passed with three readings 4/0, with Alderman Blade abstaining.

Alderman Abernathy reported that Home Depot will be providing all materials and man power for the repairs of the Elkton City Park. The city asks that any and all citizens participate in the project that will be announced at a later date.

Alderman Abernathy also stated that some concerned citizens were asking for a street light on Newman Hollow Road for their safety on a dark portion of the road.

A motion was made by Alderman Turner to purchase an office chair not exceeding $100. The motion was seconded by Alderman Blade and passed 5/0.

Alderman Turner made a motion to appoint Alderman Blade to Fire Chief. The motion was seconded by Alderman Wilburn and passed 4/0 with Alderman Blade abstaining.

A motion was made by Alderman Turner to raise the salary of three full-time city employees by $1 per hour. The motion was seconded by Alderman Blade and passed 5/0. With no further business, the meeting adjourned.
