I just wanted to thank Mary Prier, Ardmore, TN City Clerk, for honoring a request by this out-of-towner. When I was in Ardmore in early April, I stopped by and asked Mary if she could get the signs on Merrell Road changed to the proper spelling. The signs were spelled “Merrill,” and my family, for which the road is named, has always spelled the name “Merrell.” My grandfather James Franklin Merrell, my father Fountain Clay Merrell, and my uncles Lewis Herbert Merrell and Franklin Pitts Merrell all lived on this road at some time during the past century or more. I realize this may seem an unimportant request, but the Merrell family has been in Giles and Lincoln Counties since about 1810-20, and many descendants still live in the area. I hate to see the name lost to posterity due to a simple case of misspelling. Unfortunately, the Malone Cemetery, which was originally the Merrell Cemetery has already lost it’s original identity simply because another family, the Malone family, donated more land to the cemetery. For some time it was the Merrell-Malone Cemetery, but for many years the Merrell part of the name has been dropped. It isn’t that my family is of any more importance than any other family in the area. It is simply that early history is often lost along the way. Anyway, I sincerely thank Mary for being as efficient as she always is in taking care of city business. Sincerely, Loretta Merrell Ekis Dear Editor, Hi, I’m Louie Hamilton.
