Area Voters Go To The Polls

New officers of the Ardmore Lions Club were recently inducted by District Governor of Lions International Dan Arliss. The 2006-2007 President is Mike Magnusson. Other officers include Joe Douthit, treasurer; Jim Keith, secretary; Glen Coffman, tail twister; and Diane Fowler, public relations. The District Governor also inducted new members, Louise and Glen Coffman and Diane Fowler.

As usual members shared a meal before the official ceremonies. After the meal, those present enjoyed an interesting talk by the District Governor. He reminded the members of the Lions mission statement by playing a reproduction of the original speech given by Miss Helen Keller in 1925 when she challenged the service organization to become "Knights of the Blind in her Cruise against Darknes". From this challenge, Lions clubs are recognized worldwide for their service to the blind and visually impaired. Today Lions extend their commitment to sight conservation through local efforts, as well as their international SightFirst Program and Lions World Sight Day. Lions collect and recycle eyeglasses for distribution to developing countries.

In addition, Lions make a strong commitment to youth through outreach programs, build homes for disabled, support diabetes education, conduct hearing programs and provide disaster relief around the world. They provide free quality eye care, eyeglasses, Braille writers, large print texts, white canes and guide dogs for thousands of people each year.

Funds for the charitable services provided by the local Lions club come from sales of mops and brooms and the annual basketball tournament sponsorship. Businesses buy space to advertise on banners that are displayed at the ball games. Lions will be out selling advertisement to sponsors, so please remember how committed they are to serving this community when you are asked to participate.

If you are aware of anyone in need of financial help for eyeglasses, please contact Nick Holland, Eye Sight Committee Chair, at Jones Drug Store.
