Area Football Teams Play Season Openers

The Giles County Bobcats were winners and the Lincoln County Falcons were not in their football season opening game on Friday night.

The Bobcats, led by Sam Edgmon, ran past the visiting Mt. Pleasant Tigers 56-13 while the Falcons dropped the season opener on the road to the Franklin Rebels 17-7.

Edgmon scored five touchdowns and rushed for 265 yards to lead the Bobcats. The former South Giles Eagles standout scored all three six-pointers in the opening quarter, on runs of 6-yards and 18-yards respectively and on a 13-yard pass from Joseph Dunavant. Jon Stafford provided all three extra points.

Mt. Pleasant’s Mario Daly scored the initial touchdown of the second quarter on a 34-yard carry. Jesus Ortega added the extra point.

Dunavant gave the Bobcats six more points on a 32-yard carry before Edgmon scored on a 1-yard run. Stafford was good on both extra point attempts.

Edgmon’s 47-yard run produced the only points of the third quarter.

Both teams scored in the fourth, Mark McClerick on a 79-juant for the Tigers and Bo Wallace on a 1-yard run for the Bobcats. Stafford’s one-pointer ended the scoring.

The Bobcats travel to Lawrenceburg on Friday in the traditional battle for the cowbell. Lawrence County defeated Loretto 33-14 in the season opener for both schools.

Franklin 17

Lincoln County 7

The Franklin Rebels scored the last 10 points in their 17-7 win over the visiting Lincoln County Falcons last Friday.

The Falcons got the early lead, 7-0, after an interception set up the first touchdown for the visitors. Jeremy Ramsey scored on a 4-yard run and R. J. Sandmeyer kicked the extra point to give Lincoln County a 7-0 lead.

Franklin knotted the score when Todd Campbell, who has committed to the University of Tennessee, scored on a 43-yard run. John Thomas kicked the extra point to tie the score. Before the quarter’s end Thomas kicked 38-yard field goal to give the Rebels the lead.

Casey Dykes put the game out of reach by scoring on a 9-yard run with about 3:30 remaining in the game. Thomas provided the extra point.

Ramsey accounted for 134 yards rushing on 24 carries for the Falcons.

Lincoln County is on the road again this Friday traveling to Murfreesboro to face Blackman.
