Holt Named As Elkton’s Vice-Mayor by Perry Lewter After a seven-minute uninterrupted appeal from Carolyn Holt to be chosen vice-mayor of Elkton, her request was granted. By a 3-2 vote Holt was elected to serve in that position for the next two years. During that appeal Holt gave a detailed description of the most recent elections in Elkton. On several occasions she stated that the majority of the time the candidate with highest number of votes was chosen vice mayor. She also said when Doug Turner was elected vice-mayor when she came on the board, that election was illegal and she should have been vice mayor. She added there has never been a female vice mayor, black or white. Alderman Roosevelt Whitfield nominated Holt for that position. Alderman Doug Turner nominated Payton Blade for vice mayor. Holt’s votes came from Whitfield, Theresa Abernathy and herself. Blade and Turner voted for Blade. The new police car should be in Elkton by now. Police Chief Jim Stewart said he would be driving to Indiana Monday, September 4, to pick up the car. During the police report, Stewart reported four arrests, five calls for service and 73 citations written. Part of the citations came from the Click-It-Or-Ticket campaign. By participating in that, the city will receive a $5,000 grant. The council approved a pay increase for part-time officer Chris Cook. Stewart asked for additional hours for Cook if needed. Mayor Bill Ware stated he could approve that, if needed, for an emergency. Stewart can approve if the mayor is not available. The mayor named the following committee chairpersons for the year. Alderman Whitfield will oversee the park, Alderman Blade the fire department, Alderman Abernathy the street department and Alderman Turner the police department. The city retained Andy Hoover as city judge and Joe Fowlkes as city attorney. Certificates of appreciation were given by the mayor to Brenda Mitchell, her daughter Stephanie and a Boy Scout troop for their help with the festival in the park. Fire Chief Dan Yant reported there were two meetings and six calls for service in August. He also learned that Elkton will receive a $1,060 forestry grant. The financial report was approved without discussion. The minutes of the August meeting were approved without discussion. |
