Thora Lee Bailes Rainey

Thora Lee Bailes Rainey, 99, of East College Street, Pulaski, TN, died Thursday, August 31, 2006, at NHC Nursing Home, Pulaski, TN.

Graveside funeral services were held Sunday, September 3, at 2 p.m. at Elkton Cemetery in Elkton, TN, with Rev. John C. Ives officiating. Burial followed with Ardmore Memorial Funeral Home in charge.

Mrs. Rainey was born August 4, 1907 to Thomas P. Bailes and Emma Lewis Bailes in Madison County, AL. She lived in the Elkton/Ardmore area all of her life. She was a homemaker and a businesswoman having owned and operated Rainey’s Shoes in Ardmore for many years. She was a member of the Elkton Methodist Church. Mrs. Rainey was preceded in death by her husband, Selvin Rainey; and sons, J.S. “Buster” Rainey and Don Rainey.

Survivors include one daughter, Dorothy (Charles) Richards of Fort Mill, SC; daughters-in-law, Paula Rainey of Ardmore and Mary Rainey of Elkton; grandchildren, Terry Patterson of South Carolina, Dee Rainey and Mac Rainey both of Athens, AL; great-grandchildren, Didi Rainey, Rainey Patterson, Savannah and Val Rainey; one sister, Louise David of Athens, AL.


Arnold “Rat” Lemons

Arnold “Rat” Lemons, 66, of Jo Mar Road, Ardmore, AL, died Wednesday, August 30, 2006, at his residence.

Memorial services were held Saturday, September 2, at 6 p.m. at Ardmore Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jerry Hovis officiating.

Arnold Radford Lemons was born May 12, 1940 in Hazel Green, AL, to James Arnold Lemons and Myrtle Estelle Boyette Lemons. He lived all his life in North Alabama. He worked for Huntsville Manufacturing for 30 years and then Ditto Landing. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Billy Joe Lemons.

Survivors include his wife, Kathy Lemons of Ardmore, AL; son, Rick Lemons of Somerville, AL; daughters, Debbie Dailey of Hazel Green, AL, Beth Lemons Whitaker of Morgan City, AL, and Emily Lewis of Ardmore, AL; brother, Jerry Lemons of Hazel Green, AL; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to the Heart or Kidney Foundations.


J.D. Reyer

J.D. Reyer, 76, of Spring Valley Road, Decatur, AL, formerly of Ardmore, AL, died Wednesday, August 30, 2006, at UAB Hospital, Birmingham, AL.

Funeral services were held Saturday, September 2, at 1 p.m. at Ardmore Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Harold Fanning and Bro. Sammy Brister officiating. Burial was in the Gatlin Cemetery with Ardmore Memorial Funeral Home in charge.

J.D. Reyer was born November 19, 1929, in Ardmore, AL, to Daniel A. Reyer and Elizabeth McGuire Reyer. He lived most of his life in this area. He was a member of Shoal Creek Baptist Church and a veteran of the Navy. Mr. Reyer was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Henry Reyer; and sister, Georgia Thompson.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Reyer of Decatur, AL; son, Jeff Reyer of Decatur, AL; brothers, Junior Reyer and Sam Reyer, both of Ardmore, AL; sisters, Ruth Bryant of Taft, TN, Annell Campbell and Betty Campbell, both of Ardmore, AL.

Nephews served as pallbearers.


Harold Dean Murrell Sr.

Harold Dean Murrell Sr., 64, of Athens, AL, died Monday, September 4, 2006, at Parkway Medical Center, Decatur, AL.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 6, at 11 a.m. at Spry Funeral Home Chapel in Athens with Mike Davis officiating. Burial will be in the Gatlin Cemetery with Spry Funeral Home in charge.

Harold Dean Murrell Sr. was born February 14, 1942 in Lawrence County, TN. He was a former coach and teacher at Ardmore High School where he led the basketball program to seven County Championships and one State Tournament appearance while receiving four regional Coach of the Year honors. He served as basketball coach at Northwest Junior College in Phil Campbell, AL.

Murrell retired as basketball coach and athletic director at Athens State University. During his tenure, the Bears recorded seven 20-win seasons and five additional years of 18 wins or more. Four of his teams won the Southern States Conference Championships and there were two “Final Eight” appearances in the NAIA National Tournament. For his efforts, Murrell received three NAIA District Coach of the Year honors as well as the Alabama Small College Coach of the Year.

His career overall record includes 33 years with 508 wins and 371 losses. Coach Murrell was a 2004 Limestone County Sports Hall of Fame inductee. He was the winningest coach in Athens State history. Murrell also served Athens State University as head baseball coach.

Survivors include his wife, Pat Murrell of Athens; one son, Hal Murrell of Thompson Station, TN; two sisters, Marjorie Busby of Madison, TN, and Janie Smith of Murfreesboro, TN.

Pallbearers will be Sam Echols, John Curtis, Thomas Adcock, Troy Hogan, Matt Powell, and Aaron Busby. Honorary pallbearer will be Kermit Smith.


Bubba Lester Wilkes

Bubba Lester Wilkes, 39, of Fayetteville, TN, died Tuesday, August 29, 2006.

Funeral services were held Friday, September 1, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of the Gallant Funeral Home with Pastor Patricia Staggs officiating. Burial was in the Riverview Memorial Gardens with Gallant Funeral Home in charge.

A native of Davidson County, TN, he was the son of the late William Thomas Wilkes and the late Frances Sullivan Raby. He was a member of the House of Faith Healing and Restoration Center.

Survivors include his wife, Charlene Wilkes of Fayetteville, TN; one son, Justin Wilkes of Fayetteville, TN; three sisters Pat Wilkes of Florida, Jo Daly and Lou Moyers both of Fayetteville, TN; and one brother, Billy Wilkes of Georgia.
