Tigers Rout Red Devils
In Season Opener 42-21

Ardmore High School’s junior tailback Derrick Green opened the 2006 in grand fashion at Cooper Field last Friday night. Running behind a solid offensive line and downfield blocking, Green amassed 215 yards rushing and scored four touchdowns as the Tigers defeated the visiting Elkmont Red Devils by a score of 42-21.

The score may have been more lopsided, but Tiger Head Coach Tracy Malone chose to rest most of his starters in the second half. Ardmore led 27-0 at the end of the first quarter and 42-7 at the half.

Elkmont showed resiliency and tenacity in the game and never gave up. Still, the Red Devils could not overcome six turnovers, costly penalties, and a stubborn Ardmore defense.

Ardmore started the game in a positive fashion when Duron Robinson returned the opening kickoff all the way to the Red Devil 46 yard-line. The Tigers turned the ball over on downs, but that’s when things quickly went sour for Elkmont.

On the second play from scrimmage, Tiger Jarrod Mullins recovered an Elkmont fumble, giving the Tigers a first down at the Red Devil 33. Green went to work, gaining 15 yards on his first carry, eight yards on the next play, and four yards on his third run, giving the Tigers a first-and-goal at the Elkmont six yard-line. On the next play, Green rambled into the end zone to put Ardmore up 6-0 with 6:49 remaining in the first quarter. The extra-point attempt was no good.

On their next possession, the Red Devils again saw disaster strike. Mullins picked up another Elkmont fumble and raced 15 yards for a touchdown. Landon Curtis booted the extra-point and the Tigers led 13-0 with 5:57 left to play in the first period.

Led by quarterback Jonathan Carter, Elkmont began to move the ball on its next possession, but was forced to punt after two costly penalties stymied the drive.

Ardmore took over on its own 24 yard-line and, again, Green provided offensive fireworks. The junior tailback scampered for seven yards on the first play from scrimmage, then ran around left end on his second carry, rambling 69 yards for the Tigers’ third touchdown of the quarter. Curtis converted the extra-point and Ardmore led 20-0 with just 37 seconds left on the clock before the end of the first quarter.

Elkmont, aided by a roughing the passer call against the Tigers, moved into to Ardmore territory as the first half wound down. However, the fumble bug struck again and the Red Devils coughed the ball up for the third time, giving Ardmore a first down at its own 38.

On the first play from scrimmage, Green ran through a gaping hole created by the offensive line, broke a tackle, and turned on the after burners. When the dust settled, Green was standing in the end zone with his third touchdown of the game. Curtis booted the point-after and Ardmore led 27-0 with just eight seconds left in the first quarter.

Elkmont was forced to punt on its next possession and the Tigers took over on their own 25 yard-line. Green again broke through an opening in the line, broke two tackles and rambled 75 yards into the end zone. The play, however, was nullified by a penalty. Ardmore took over on its own 37.

Quarterback Elijah Barnes hooked up with fullback Landon Curtis for a 26-yard gain, giving the Tigers a first down on the Red Devil 21. On the next play, Barnes hit wide out Jake Lewis for a nine-yard gain and the Tigers were again deep in the Red Zone. On the next play from scrimmage, Green raced into the end zone from 10 yards out, giving the speedy junior four scores on the night. Barnes hit Drew Cagle at the back of the end zone for a successful two-point conversion and Ardmore took a 35-0 lead with 8:59 left in the half.

Elkmont coughed the ball up again on its next possession and Tiger defensive back Tavo Sanchez recovered, giving Ardmore a first down at the Red Devil 34. Ardmore was unable to advance the ball and Elkmont eventually gained possession on downs at its own 21 yard-line.

The Red Devils were able to gradually move the ball down the field and finally got on the scoreboard when Matthew Compton reeled off a 10-yard run into the end zone. John Schrimsher nailed the extra-point to cut the Tiger lead to 35-7 with 2:30 left in the half.

Ardmore, however, was not finished yet.

Duron Robinson took the ensuing kickoff and, breaking several tackles along the way, rambled into the end zone on an 80-yard kickoff return. Curtis hit the point-after to give the Tigers a 42-7 lead heading into the locker room at the half.

Robinson also got in on the action in the third quarter, picking off an Elkmont pass and returning the ball all the way back to the Red Devil 20 yard-line.

Elkmont put up two more touchdowns in the second half, both on fourth quarter touchdown runs by Josh McWilliams.

Lost in the offensive fireworks of the game was the outstanding play of the Tiger defense. Inside linebacker Landon Curtis made several bone-jarring tackles and Tavo Sanchez was all over the field defensively and recovered a fumble. Robinson’s interception was also big, as was the consistent play of the Tiger defensive line.

Green rushed for 215 yards and four touchdowns. Barnes was three-for-five through the air for 38 yards and backup quarterback Clay Wales was one-for-one for 17 yards. Robinson sparkled with a long kickoff return and an interception.

Ardmore takes to the road next week, playing East Lawrence. East Lawrence lost its season opener to Lawrence County by a score of 25-7.
