Cooking, Cross-Stitching, Decorating, Recycling, Painting, Woodworking, and Writing Competition highlighted the month of August for the Madison X-Rds Homemakers Club. First, allow me to comment on our regular monthly meeting. It was a treat for twelve of our homemaker members to go to the Home of Virginia Laux in Huntsville, for our August 22nd meeting. Virginia and her husband, Joe, had a home with acreage in the Madison X-Roads Community for many years. Virginia remains a Club member since her move to Huntsville. A personal note about Virginia is that she collects cookbooks; she not only collects them but enjoys cooking from the new recipes!! She served the homemakers group a fresh peach cake, freshly baked. “Yummy,” as is all her baking and other aspects of cooking. She is a gracious hostess. Opaline West gave a very meaningful program taken from the September Issue of Aside from our monthly meeting, another activity highlight for our club was the Madison County Homemakers and Community Leaders (MCHCL) Cultural Arts Exhibit and Tea on August 29 at the Madison First Baptist Church. Statistics are as follows regarding Cultural Arts entries: Countywide there were approximately 125 total entries from 12 Homemaker Clubs throughout the county. 45 countywide 1st place winners were entered in the Cultural Arts Exhibit at the Alabama Homemakers and Community Leaders (AHCL) State Convention held September 8, 9, 10 at the Sheraton Birmingham Hotel. Out of the 45 1st Place winners, Madison County State winners were as follows: 18 - 1st Place; 11 - 2nd Place; 6 - 3rd Place; and 4 Honorable Mentions. Now, to narrow winners down to the Madison X-Rds. Homemakers Club, we had 10 1st place county winners and we placed at the State Level as follows: 5 - 1st Place; 2 - 2nd Place; 2 - 3rd Place and 1 Honorable Mention. It speaks for itself that our club, through using its talents and putting forth the necessary effort, at the final judging had 10 State-Winning entries! WOW!! Madison X-Rds. Homemakers. winners were in the categories of Poetry, Decorated Clothing, Gourd Art, Decorative Birdhouse, Handcrafted Birdhouse, Recycled Small Item, Tole Painting, Easter Decoration, Cross-Stitched Baby Quilt, and Recycled Decoration. Dainie Tidwell, Club “Home” Coordinator, Opaline West, Club President, and Emily Haggard, Crafts Leader, gave us early and continued encouragement to work on items for the Exhibit. We worked at the New Sharon Senior Center on some of our arts and crafts.
