Community Loses Business Owners

The Ardmore community lost two local business owners with the recent deaths of Frances Carter and Glen “Turk” Magnusson. Carter died Saturday, October 7, at her home in Ardmore. Magnusson died Monday, October 9, at Huntsville Hospital.

Frances Carter was the owner of the Merle Norman Cosmetic Studio located on Ardmore Avenue. A native of Ruleville, MS, Carter had lived in Ardmore for 18 years, coming from Slidell, LA. She was a Baptist.

Fran, as she was known by friends, is survived by three daughters, Sandy Carter DeWeese, Pam Carter Hicklen, Jo Leigh Carter Mason; and one son, Henry J. “Son” Carter. She is also survived by four sisters, Paula Rainey, Jeanne Bowman, Patsy Dunnavant and Connie Woodall; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held Sunday, October 8 at the Ardmore Memorial Funeral Home Chapel. Philip and Debbie Eubanks officiated.

Preceded in death by his first wife, Anna, Glen “Turk” Magnusson was the owner of Magnusson’s Variety Store on Ardmore Avenue. A lifelong resident of Ardmore, Magnusson had operated the local store for 56 years. He was a WWII Army veteran and a member of the Ardmore United Methodist Church.

Turk is survived by his wife, Helen Magnusson; one daughter, Glenda Magnusson; stepchildren, Billy Joe Rich and Patsy Hall; two sisters, Kathleen Hillis and Lorene Davis; three step-grandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Wed., Oct. 11, at 11 a.m. at Ardmore Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Philip and Debbie Eubanks, Rev. Lynn Marshall and Bro. Melvin Brooks officiating. Burial will be in the Gatlin Cemetery in Ardmore.
