Students currently are preparing for the Gateway and end-of-course exams that will be given the first week in December. The exams will start on Friday, December 1, with the end-of-course exam for American history. On Monday, December 4, the physical science end-of-course test will be given. The Gateway tests follow with mathematics (Algebra 1) test on Tuesday, December 5; language arts (English 10) test on Wednesday, December 6; and science (biology) test on Thursday, December 7. All students currently enrolled in Algebra 1, English 10, and biology are required to take the tests, as well as students who have transferred from other states or have not passed the tests on previous attempts. Students taking these exams should be present those days because the exams count one-sixth of their final grade. In addition, the Gateway tests are part of the graduation requirements for students. Review and remediation sessions are being offered this semester. Jennifer McCann is available to work with Algebra 1 students before school on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday mornings from 6:55 - 7:55 a.m. and Wednesday afternoon from 3:05 - 4:05 p.m. Janis Myers is available in the library each morning Monday through Friday from 7:05 - 7:50 a.m. and Monday through Thursday afternoons from 3:05 - 3:55 p.m. to help with the Language (English 10). For the Science Gateway (Biology) Amy Clemons is reviewing in Room 18 Monday through Thursday from 7:00 - 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 - 4:00 p.m. The week of November 6 - 10, she will review genetics, and November 13 - 17 she will review DNA. Since we are out of school November 20 - 24 for Thanksgiving vacation, students do not have much time to review. Performance indicators containing the skills that are tested in the subject areas can be found by going to www.state.tn.us/education/circur.assessedstandards.htm, and practice tests are available at www.state.tn.us/education/tsscwebsamf02tng.pdf. All students who are enrolled in Algebra 1, English 10 and biology are given a practice test in their classes. Several opportunities have been announced this week for sophomores, juniors, and seniors. On Wednesday, November 8, an admissions counselor from Martin Methodist College will be at Lincoln County High School during lunch to talk to interested students. The Tennessee Governor’s Schools applications are in guidance for sophomores and juniors who are in good academic standing. The deadline is December 1.
