Sparkman Senators Rewrite Record Book

When Brandon Busby and Adam Korak knocked down a Tuscaloosa County pass on fourth down in the second overtime it gave the Sparkman Senators a 38-31 win Friday in the first round of the state playoffs. That goes down in the Senator record book as the first win in seven tries in the state playoffs.

With the win, the Senators will host Vestavia Hills Friday. Vestavia Hills is 6-5 this season.

The Senators accumulated 311 yards rushing on 55 carries. Bryant Williams led the winners with 139 of those yards, 120 in the second half including two touchdowns. Dee Elston had 95 yard and Jusmon Rivers added 84.

The Senators trailed 10-7 at the half and had to play catch up until they got the lead in the second overtime.

Stacey Terry kicked a 27-yard field goal for Tuscaloosa County after a recovered Senator fumble. The lead extended to 10 when Corey Collier caught a 23-yard pass from Brett Booth.

Rivers scored on a 1-yard run for the Senators to narrow that lead. Michael Kitchens kicked his first of six extra points in the second quarter.

Caleb Lewis caught a 10-yard scoring pass for the Wildcats. Elston countered for Sparkman by scoring on a 28-yard run. Kitchens’ 29-yard field goal for the Senators tied the score.

The Wildcats regained the lead on Jonathan Childs’ 4-yard scoring run with just over eight minutes left in the fourth quarter, Sparkman pulled even on Williams’ 27-yard run.

In the first overtime, Walter Grayson caught a 10-yard pass from Booth and Williams countered with a 3-yard touchdown run for the Senators.

The deciding touchdown came in the second overtime when Rivers scored on a 10-yard carry.

The knocked down pass by Busby and Korak ended the contest.
