Finish Season 10 and 2

The David Lipscomb Mustangs used a strong second half and a stingy defensive to defeat Giles County 21-14 in the quarterfinals of the Class 3A state football playoffs in Nashville.

Earlier this season, the Mustangs ended the Bobcats’ win streak with a 28-3 loss. David Lipscomb ends the Bobcat season leaving them a 10-2 worksheet.

Drew McNairy scored on a 2-yard run and Jon Stafford kicked the extra point to give the Bobcats a 7-0 lead that stood until the third quarter.

Matt Elrod caught a 72-yard touchdown pass from Brad Hunt and the extra point kick knotted the score at 7-7 in the third quarter.

Giles County regained the lead in the fourth when Sam Edgmon scored on a 3-yard run. Stafford’s extra point kick gave them their last lead.

Matt Elrod scored the last two six pointers to assure the Mustangs of the win. Elrod scored on an 18-yard pass from Hunt and then on a 4-yard carry.

The Bobcats out rushed their opposition gaining 263 yards on the ground while limiting the Mustangs to 135 yards. Bobcat quarterback Joseph Dunavant was the top ground gainer with 155 of those yards. Lipscomb held the passing advantage completing four passes for 100 yards while the Bobcats had three total yards passing completing 2-of-5 attempts.

Lipscomb faces Dyersburg in the semifinals on Friday. In the other matchup Pearl Cohn faces Knoxville Fulton.
