Former Mayor Gene Shannon Honored With Resolution
Family members, friends and former co-workers gathered Thursday, July 16, at the Ardmore, Alabama Council Chambers to honor former Ardmore Mayor Gene Shannon. Alabama District 5 Representative Henry White presented a proclamation from the Alabama State Legislature honoring Shannon for his service to the Town of Ardmore and the community.
Ardmore Police Chief Doc Oliver opened the ceremony with prayer and comments about former Mayor Shannon. Rep. White then made the presentation to Mrs. Elayne Shannon, sons Gerry and Ricky and their families. Gary Powers also presented a flag that had flown over the capitol to the Shannon family in appreciation for the many contributions that Mayor Shannon had made to the community. Others attending the ceremony were relatives and friends of the family, members of the Town Council and City Council, and members of the police department. Refreshments were served.
A well-known figure in the local community, Shannon has a long history of dedicated service to Ardmore. First elected to the Ardmore Town Council in 1972, Shannon served in the capacity of councilman until 1979, when he won election to the Town of Ardmore, AL mayoral seat. Shannon served until 1980, when he was forced to resign due to illness. Shannon, however, did not know the meaning of the word “quit.” Running for mayor again in 1984, Shannon won the election and was elected for yet another term in August, 2008. He served in that position until his death November 30, 2008.
“Mayor Shannon’s service and his desire to see Ardmore grow and prosper were outstanding,” said current Mayor Ricky Mitchell. “His shoes are going to be hard to fill.”
