Elkmont Blanks Lady Wildcats;
by Dwight Turner Most knowledgeable softball fans expected the Elkmont High School Softball Team to perform well entering last week’s Class 3A, Area 15 tournament. No one, however, expected the Lady Red Devils to go all the way to the Area title in such a compelling fashion. After winning the first two games, Elkmont squared off in the tournament final against a familiar foe, county rival West Limestone. Riding the arm of Megan Honea and an explosive offense, the Lady Red Devils blanked the Lady Wildcats 5-0. It was Elkmont’s second shutout in three games. Honea pitched a masterful game from the circle, recording the shutout while striking out five and giving up only a pair of hits. Bailee Robinson belted two doubles for the Lady Red Devils and teammate Courtney Phillips tallied three singles. Stephanie Biggerstaff came up with a clutch two-bagger and drove in a pair of runs. Stephanie Hogan added a double and a single and Brandi Gooch drilled a single as well. Honea helped her own cause with two singles. Elkmont had earlier defeated Lauderdale County by a score of 7-0. The Lady Red Devils were slated to be at home against Winfield yesterday, while the Lady Wildcats of West Limestone traveled to Carbon Hill in sub-state action. |
